Synopsis
In 40 years, African reggae had supplanted Jamaican reggae, bringing a musical freshness to the instruments and rhythms and perpetuating the singularity of this music: political activism. It was through supporting revolutions and political and social independence that Reggae spread in Africa.
That’s the epic tale I choose to narrate in Zion Music following a chronology that begins with the 1976 Soweto riots and stretches to the present day.
I am not telling one single story but several that form a coherent unity. The story of Lucky Dube, now deceased, which is told in a form of cinema “testimony” by one of his relatives Stella Antos, who was his press agent and then producer for 35 years. Parallel to it comes the story of Alpha Blondy, the precursor of African reggae, whose professional career began in 1981. And then there is the journey of Tiken Jah Fakoly, also an Ivorian musician whose career began in the mid-90s and continued during the war in Ivory Coast, which forced him into exile in Mali.
Finally, there is “The Next One”, played on screen by an Ethiopian musician who belongs to the Rasta community of Shashamané.
This whole ensemble is structured within a very precise musical canvas where song lyrics and their hidden meanings allow us to circulate through the political and spiritual history of the Continent.
