Synopsis
This phenomenon spares no one : everywhere around the world, men and women leave one day in search of a better life. This happened with Guy Régis Jr’s father, who left Haïti and never came back. How does one grow up with this empty space, and with the silence surrounding this absence? « LES CINQ FOIS OÙ J’AI VU MON PÈRE » is an exercise of recollection spread on several mediums, each of them bringing on new nuances to the story : a novel, then a theatre play, and now a film. Words to travel back in time, mend memory lapses, make up stories, check old memories are genuine ones. Zooming out, realising that the act of leaving is an intimate wound, but also the result of an island destroyed by greedy and torturing politicians, an island in the midst of economic and natural catastrophes. In Port-au-Prince, the news cradles daily lives marked by unrest. Children do not remain carefree long. Poetry, wether it is written or spoken on a theatre stage, will now turn into images to ward off ill fortune. To help one learn how to live, become a free spirit.
The writer-narrator questions absence, memory, silence, mystery, and the marks left there before they are erased.
