Bio
Guy Régis Jr was born in 1974 in Port-au-Prince, Haïti. He likes to create without a care for the limits of genre or form. He is a writer, a comedian, and both a theatre and film director. His works include theatre, novels and poetry, and they are translated into several languages ; he is himself a translator from the French into Haïtian creole. His books The Five Times I Saw My Father and the play Goebbels, juif et footballer were both published in 2020 by Gallimard. Guy Régis Jr has also directed experimental short films. In 2001, he created the NOUS Théâtre movement, which shook up his country’s conventions regarding contemporary theatre, creating the play Service Violence Série (2005) in particular, a political and dramaturgical statement at the root of Régis’ work. Guy Régis Jr’s performative art has been played in France (Festival Les Francophonies de Limoges, IN du Festival d’Avignon, several Scènes Nationales), in Haïti and around the world (USA, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Madagascar…). In parallel, he also works in Haïti for the promotion and development of performing arts locally. He is the current artistic director of the Festival 4 Chemins, a landmark of Port-au-Prince’s cultural life and the festival now shines all across the French-speaking Caribbean region. He was a resident at the Villa Médicis in 2021-2022. In 2017, Guy Régis Jr. was knighted for his contribution to Arts and Letters.
